Choosing the Right Hospice Care: 10 Questions to Consider
Someday, you or someone you love may need hospice care. Rather than waiting for a crisis, it’s wise to consider your options now. Understanding what is important when choosing a hospice provider can make a significant difference.
As with all healthcare decisions, you have complete control over your choice of a hospice provider. Not all hospices are the same, and finding the right one for you and your family involves careful consideration. Interviewing different hospices and seeking recommendations from trusted sources familiar with local hospice programs can be very helpful.
Here are 10 key questions to guide your decision-making process:
- What services are provided by the hospice?
- Is the hospice providing care as a non-profit, or is it owned by a company seeking to make a profit?
- Is the hospice accredited, licensed, and Medicare-certified?
- How long has the hospice been serving patients in my area?
- How will the hospice work to manage my pain and keep me comfortable?
- How and where does the hospice provide inpatient care?
- Will the hospice provide a hospital bed or other medical equipment?
- Does the hospice provide help outside of normal business hours? Weekends? Holidays?
- How will the hospice prepare me and my family for what to expect as my condition progresses?
- How will the hospice team support me and my family through the grieving process?
